As Fred Brooks wisely said, "Adding manpower to a late software project only makes it later." Nearly 50 years after the publication of "The Mythical Man-Month", this insight still holds true. In complex software development, more isn't always better. Small, agile teams often achieve more due to enhanced collaboration and fewer communication overhead (the number of lines of communication increases exponentially with the team size!) CTO roles and responsibility change depends on organization. If you are in early stage startup where you and few of your co-founder is the only employee. The only reason you call yourself a cto is to make your company big than it actually is. You are more of hacker than a cto. Your responsibility is to build the product not to do strategic planning long term as your mvp might not survive the next iteration.

—> My Take on SaaS in 2025💙 : 1/ The market is overcrowded. By 2025, niche players will either be acquired or forced to pivot. We’ll see fewer tools, but the ones that survive will dominate their categories with deeper integrations and unmatched value. 2/ Automation and analytics will no longer be add-ons—they’ll be fundamental. SaaS solutions will need to offer smarter workflows, proactive insights, and seamless user experiences that solve problems before they arise. 3/ The subscription economy will mature. Companies will prioritize keeping their existing users over burning cash on ads. Continuous onboarding, usage-based pricing, and personalized experiences will define success. 4/ No-code tools will evolve into no-code ecosystems. Platforms won’t just help users build—they’ll empower communities to create and scale solutions without technical expertise. This shift will lower barriers for SMBs and fuel innovation. 5/ Security will become a deal-breaker. As SaaS becomes more critical to businesses, it will also become a bigger target. Investing in zero-trust frameworks and robust data protection will no longer be optional—it’ll be essential. 6/ The next wave of SaaS growth will come from emerging markets. These regions will demand leaner, cost-effective solutions tailored to their unique challenges. Outbound has never been easier When I started with cold emailing ...it was a PAIN to: 4.) Buy domains 3.) Set up inboxes 2.) Find +60-80% emails 1.) Send them out at scale Luckily, things just got 10x easier these days. 1.) + 3.) + 4.) can be done in a single tool. A few clicks, and you're ready to go. For 2.), just get a list from Apollo/LinkedIn. And find the emails with BetterContact. It combines every relevant email finder/verifier. (because a single tool only finds ~30-50%) Meaning: you only need 1 subscription, and not 5-6. So yes, getting started is easy. I agree with Marc's comments below - and I'd like to add to it: When you're the CTO, it's easy to miss the impact your direct participation in coding has on the rest of the dev team. In your mind, you're clear on what hat you're wearing at a given moment - CTO, leader, or just one of the coders. But your staff will always see you as the CTO. ⚠ When you advocate for an approach or technology, you're not advocating as just one of the voices in the choir - ➡ you're advocating as the CTO. ⬅ ⚠ When you question why something was implemented a certain way, you're not just doing a code review like any other developer, ➡ you're the CTO.⬅ I've fallen into the "contributor trap" several times, and always regretted it. The team and my organization would have been better off if I'd let the work happen through the normal course of our flow.

Dear SaaS Community, Not convinced that 𝗮 𝗖𝗧𝗢 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲? How many reasons do you need? I’ll give you 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲: 1️⃣ Operational responsibilities conflict with strategic ones. And, as it goes, operation will then always win, because of continuous commercial pressure. So if, as a CTO, you actively work on code, this will inevitably come at the cost of having to neglect strategic responsibilities. 2️⃣ The “flow” most seniors feel when being deep into coding, is counterproductive to strategic thinking. It absorbs a high percentage of your brain capacity, at the cost of losing track of time and interest in other stuff. Relationships have stranded because of it 😏. Good strategic decision making, out-of-the-box thinking, putting things in perspective, these are all things that don’t happen when we’re “in the flow”. 3️⃣ It’s an unhealthy situation to be a C-level leader and a peer to developers at the same time, due to conflicts of interest for instance. 4️⃣ Dotting the i’s is extremely expensive for a CTO to do, the reality being that the last 10% of your software efforts accounts for 90% of development time. 5️⃣ It’s a much more sustainable growth strategy to empower development teams using your own skills and experience, than to keep doing production yourself. ————————— This is part of an article I wrote to demystify the CTO role, a role that has suffered from the Startup World's hijacking of the role name to describe a Startup's Lead Developer. Although it's perfectly common to call this Lead Dev a CTO, this "Startup CTO" type has tainted the actual role of CTO, and, even if the "Startup CTO" is important in the early stages of a Startup, it's important to keep in mind that an actual CTO is a strategic, business-oriented C-level player, and should be the one bridging the gap between the board and development.
